Did You Know That No One Is Allowed Access To The Torch Of The Statue Of Liberty Because….

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most popular landmarks in the world. Located on Liberty island in New York Harbor, the world-famous sculpture was a present from the people of France to the United States. Ever since its dedication on October 28, 1886 the Statue of Liberty has been one of the most tourist-attracting sites in the Big Apple.

A little known fact is that the torch hand of the statue is off access to the public. However, before 1916 people were actually allowed to go there. An accident that took place during World War I was the reason for closing the narrow ascent leading to the torch for good. An explosion set off by the Germans on the nearby Black Tom island caused a lot of damage to the houses in the area as well as to the Statue of Liberty situated about a mile away. The Statue was closed for several days and the cost to repair the entire damage caused by the explosion amounted $100,000. Due to safety reasons the torch hand has remained off access ever since. Today, the only people going up into the torch are maintenance crew.
